Transparen Corporation offers support for corporate users of Windows 98 computer systems, but we usually recommend upgrades if the systems are used for serious work, except under the following circumstances:
- Running on old hardware that could not support Windows XP without slowing to a crawl
- Running software that works only on Windows 98
Windows 98 systems are more likely to suffer from the following types of problems:
- Unwanted programs and system instability
- Viruses
- Internet Explorer problems
To alleviate many of these problems we usually recommend the following software:
- To remove unwanted programs, we usually recommend AdAware from LavasoftUSA. This removes common programs that track your keystrokes, what websites you visit, etc., as well as programs that display unwanted advertisements.
- To remove viruses, we recommend that all Windows computers have an up-to-date virus scanner installed. Several are available in retail packages. In addition, we support ClamAV - an Open Source Virus Scanner, which has the advantages of a distributed team of developers and experienced users who can trap viruses quickly and work together as a team to defeat viruses.
- To improve the browsing experience, and to avoid spyware and Internet Explorer issues, try Mozilla or Firefox, which have been steadily improving for the past five years.
In addition, we have noted performance problems under Windows 98 for network or server-oriented programs such as VNC.
